Key T20I Captaincy Highlights – Team India

Virender Sehwag was India’s first-ever T20I captain, leading the team in their inaugural match against South Africa in December 2006.

MS Dhoni had the longest stint as T20I captain (2007-2016) and is notable for leading India to victory in the inaugural 2007 ICC World Twenty20.

Rohit Sharma holds the record for the most T20I wins as an Indian captain (49 wins) and also led India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title. He also boasts the highest win percentage among captains with a substantial number of matches.

Suryakumar Yadav is the current T20I captain (as of late 2025).

Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul each have a 100% win record, but this is based on a very small sample size of 1-3 matches, often as stand-in captains.
