Ever since Twenty20 cricket made its debut in the international arena in the late 2004s (First Women’s T20I Match) and the early 2005s (First Men’s T20 Match), the format has seen a rise in popularity and, thus, a hike in the number of matches every year.
The format saw its first World Cup in 2007. Two teams, India and Pakistan, said to be the last to accept the idea of T20 Internationals, reached the finals. Men in Blue, under the new and refreshing leadership of MS Dhoni for the first time, won the inaugural T20 World Cup.
Since then, there have been 8 World Cups held, and the 9th edition of the tournament is scheduled for 2024 in West Indies and USA.
