Key Insights on Leading Home Wicket Takers in ODI Cricket Annually

Top Calendar Year Wicket Takers on Home Soil

Mohammed Shami of India has taken the most ODI wickets at home in a calendar year. The pacer took a whopping 40 ODI wickets in India during the 2023 season, and it was largely due to the World Cup, which was played in India. It is to be noted that Shami emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps in the tournament.

Shaun Pollock occupies the second and third positions in this elite list. The former South African skipper picked 34 wickets apiece at home in both 2000 & 2002, and it came at an average of less than 20 in both cases.

Mohammed Siraj of India and Pollock’s long-time teammate Makhaya Ntini complete the top 5 in the list of bowlers with most ODI wickets at home in a calendar year.

The exceptional yearly performances of the teams directly correlate with their overall results in those specific years, for instance, India in 2023 and South Africa in 2000 are among the teams with the most One-Day International (ODI) wins recorded within a single calendar year.

It is notable that the top four overall ODI bowling performances in a single calendar year do not appear on the list of highest home wicket-takers, which highlights how effective those bowlers were when playing outside their home country, though Anil Kumble in 1996 is an exception as his performance secured him a spot on both lists.

Shaun Pollock holds the record for the most ODI wickets taken on home soil with 193, followed by Shakib Al Hasan (183) and Brett Lee (169).

Bowlers with 25 or more ODI wickets in a single year at home

Apart from the 10 mentioned here, there are no instances of a bowler taking 30 or more wickets in ODIs in a calendar year at home.

However, a total of 29 occurrences have occurred where a bowler has taken a minimum of 25 ODI wickets in a year at home, and this has been achieved by 28 different bowlers.

Only 1 bowler, Shaun Pollock, has scalped 25 or more wickets in a year at home more than once, and the rest of the pack managed to breach the mark only once.

Of the 28 bowlers, 10 of them are from India; the most from a player from a single country. Apart from the 5 bowlers mentioned in the table, Maninder Singh (26 wickets in 1987), Ravindra Jadeja (26 wickets in 2013), Ravi Ashwin (25 wickets in 2013), Harbhajan Singh (25 wickets in 2002), and Ravi Shastri (25 wickets in 1987).

Surprisingly, Australia’s Greg Chappell has the second-lowest ER (3.66) for a bowler who satisfies this criterion. He picked 25 wickets back in the 14 ODIs he played in Australia back in 1981, averaging just 17.64.
