Most T20I Matches Played by a Men’s Team

T20 cricket is the fastest-growing format. And the ICC is doing every bit to make it reach every nook and corner of the world. It is slowly getting accepted by countries that don’t usually prefer playing traditionally.

The first T20I game was played in 2005 between the traditional rivals New Zealand and Australia, with the former emerging victorious by 44 runs in the game played in Auckland. Now, T20I cricket is being played by more than 100 ICC members, and each of them has a full T20I status starting from January 2019 onwards.

Here we’ll look at the teams that have played the most T20I matches.

Most Played Matches and Historic Team Achievements

Pakistan have played the most matches among all teams in T20I cricket.

Pakistan, in fact, became the first team to play 200 matches in T20I cricket. Their 200th game was against England in Karachi on September 25, 2022, which they won by three runs.

India, meanwhile, lead the chart for the most wins by teams in the shortest format.

New Zealand, the West Indies, and India have played more than 100 matches in their respective home countries in T20Is.

India have played 30 or more matches against Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies in T20Is. (Check India’s opponent-wise T20I record here.)


Yearly Participation Milestones and Win-Loss Statistics

Indonesia have played the most T20I matches in a calendar year, having featured in 45 games in 2025.

Rwanda (42 in 2023), Bahrain (41 in 2025), and India (40 in 2022) are the other teams that have played 40 or more T20I matches in a year.

Bahrain won 33 of the 41 matches played in 2025, the most victories by a team in a calendar year in T20Is.

Rwanda, meanwhile, lost 31 of their 42 matches in 2023, the most by a team in a year in T20Is.

Zimbabwe have a loss percentage of around 62, which is the highest among the full-member teams in T20Is.


Individual Longevity and Captaincy Milestones

Rwanda’s Clinton Rubagumya is the only player to have captained a team in 90 or more T20I matches.

Rubagumya is also the only skipper to lose more than 60 matches in the shortest format.

Rohit Sharma became the first player to play 150 matches in T20I cricket.


World Cup Titles and Tied Match Records

India (2007 & 2024), England (2010 & 2022), and the West Indies (2012 & 2016) have won the T20 World Cup twice.

New Zealand are the only team to have featured in 10 or more tied matches

Notably, New Zealand are also the only team to lose five or more matches via Super Overs.
