One mistake here and there, and the whole team crumbles like a pack of cards. However, a few batters have thrived under testing conditions, turning the momentum of the game with their blistering knocks.
Some have even notched up three-digit figures during run chases, showcasing their temperament and talent.

Marcus Stoinis holds the record for registering the highest individual score while chasing a target in an IPL match. The Australian all-rounder scored an unbeaten 124 while playing for the Lucknow Super Giants against CSK in 2024.
During the same match, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad also notched up a century batting first, making it the seventh instance of two centuries scored in a match in the IPL.
Stoinis’ 124* broke the 13-year-old record of 120 runs scored by Kings XI Punjab’s Paul Valthaty in 2011. Both knocks came in successful run chases against CSK.
Yusuf Pathan holds the record for scoring the fastest century while chasing in the IPL. Representing the Rajasthan Royals, he brought up his ton in 37 balls against the Mumbai Indians in 2010, though it came in a losing cause.
Apart from him, Sanju Samson (119 vs Punjab) and Rohit Sharma (105* vs Chennai) have accumulated centuries in losing causes in run chases.
Over 25 batters have scored at least one hundred while chasing in the IPL. Only Jos Buttler and Virat Kohli have scored two or more centuries in run chases. (Check out Virat Kohli’s hundreds list here.)
One of those Buttler’s hundreds (107* vs KKR, 2024) helped Rajasthan chase down 224 runs — the joint highest successful run chase in the IPL.
Shane Watson’s unbeaten 117 is the highest score during a run chase in the playoffs. Notably, it came in the 2018 final against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Buttler is the other batter to have a ton (106* vs RCB, 2022) while chasing in the knockouts.
