Over the years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen a rise in destructive batting displays. The lighter bats, shorter boundaries, and flat wickets have brought the beast out of the batters.

Whenever batters come out to bat, they start hammering bowlers from the very first ball. Facing the new ball is difficult, but there have been instances of batters providing flying starts to their teams in the first over itself.

On that note, let’s delve into the top 10 instances of the most runs scored by batters in the first over in an IPL match.

Key Insights

26 runs scored by Yashasvi Jaiswal are the most by a batter in the first over of an IPL match. The left-hander smashed 2 sixes, 3 fours, and scored a double off Nitish Rana’s over.

Six consecutive fours slammed by Prithvi Shaw in the opening over against KKR’s Shivam Mavi. The extraordinary feat made Shaw only the second batter to hit six fours in six balls in the IPL after Ajinkya Rahane.

Jaiswal is the only batter who has scored 20 or more runs in the first over of an innings three times. Chris Gayle is the other batter with two such instances. On both occasions, Gayle accumulated exactly 20 runs against Mumbai in 2011 and Punjab in 2014.

Among the batters listed above, Jaiswal, Adam Gilchrist, and Jake Fraser-McGurk capitalised on their starts and went on to score more than 60 runs in the powerplay phase.

Gilchrist is the only batter to smash 17 or more runs in the first over against the same team in two different matches. On May 13, 2009, the Australian fetched 17 runs against Delhi Daredevils, and 10 days later, he followed it up with 20 runs.
