Key Insights on Rohit Sharma’s Year-Wise T20I Stats
Slow and Inconsistent Start to T20I Career
Rohit made his T20I debut in 2007 during the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa.
While he didn’t get a chance to bat in his debut match, he scored his maiden fifty in the very next match. He scored a valuable 50-run knock against the hosts in Durban.
Despite the decent start, Rohit wasn’t really consistent in the side. Plus, he batted at various positions, mostly lower down the order, which didn’t really help his case.
And that explains why he didn’t score a lot of runs between 2007 and 2013. He scored 539 runs across 29 innings at a strike rate of 127.12 in this period.
Consistent Run Between 2014 and 2016
But 2014 turned things around for him. He started to open for India, with consistent chances.
He scored 200 runs in six innings in 2014, making him only the second Indian opener to reach the mark in a calendar year in T20Is.
In 2015, Rohit scored the first of his five T20I hundreds. He smashed 106 from 66 balls against South Africa in the Dharamsala T20I. This also made him the second Indian centurion against South Africa.
Rohit’s 106 was also the first century by an Indian batter to end up in a losing cause in T20Is.
At the start of 2016, the Hitman completed his 1000 runs in 40 T20I innings, making him the sixth-fastest Indian batter to reach the milestone.
High-Scoring Period in 2017
In 2017, Rohit didn’t score a lot of runs. But those he scored came at an impressive rate.
He struck at 171.51 while aggregating 283 runs in nine innings. This was the first instance of an Indian opener striking above 150 in a calendar year in T20Is (minimum 100 balls faced).
Rohit is, in fact, one of the three Indian openers, alongside Abhishek Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, to maintain a strike rate above 150 in two or more years in T20Is, with 2021 (153.55) and 2024 (160.16) being the other years for him.
He wrapped up 2017 with his second T20I hundred. He scored 118 from 43 balls against Sri Lanka in Indore.
Rohit took 35 balls to bring up his hundred against Sri Lanka, making it the fastest T20I century by an Indian batter.
Two Centuries and First 500-Run Year in 2018
2018 was a grand year for Rohit. He breached the 500-run mark in a year for the first time. In fact, he became the first Indian opener to score 500-plus runs in a year in T20Is.
He scored 590 runs across 18 outings. And this was largely made possible by his two centuries in the space of three innings.
The right-hand opener scored an unbeaten 100 off 56 balls against England in Bristol, followed by an unbeaten 111 off 61 balls against the West Indies in Lucknow.
This made Rohit only the second batter to score two or more centuries in a calendar year in T20Is.
He also became the second Indian batter to score a century each against England and the West Indies in T20Is.
In between, Rohit reached 2000 T20I runs in 77 innings, the fourth-fewest innings taken by an Indian batter.
Consolidation Period from 2019 to 2024
From 2019 to 2024, excluding 2023, Rohit aggregated roughly 2000 runs (1994, to be precise). For context, he took almost 11 years to score his first 2000 runs in this format.
So, he scored at a much better rate and with better consistency in these five years, almost doubling his career run tally.
Rohit was, in fact, the sixth-highest run-getter as an opener from 2019 till his retirement in June 2024. He scored 1913 runs in 66 innings at a strike rate of 145.58.
In this same period, the Hitman became the third batter to score 3000 and 4000 runs in T20Is, in 108 and 144 innings, respectively.
And his peak in terms of runs came in 2022. He scored 656 runs across 29 outings, although at a slightly conservative strike rate of 134.42.
His 656 runs in 2022 are the most by an Indian captain in a year in T20Is. 649 of those runs came while opening, the third-most for India as an opener in a year in T20Is.
But he improved his scoring rate towards the fag end of his career. He played a few impactful knocks, including his fifth T20I hundred, taking his strike rate to 160.16.
Rohit’s last century turned out to be his highest individual score in this format. He hammered an unbeaten 121 off 69 deliveries against Afghanistan in Bengaluru.
Rohit also wrapped up his career with his best T20I score against his favourite opponent, Australia. He scored a captain’s knock of 92 off 41 balls in the 2024 T20 World Cup. (Watch the knock here!)
This knock helped India qualify for the semi-final and eventually lift their second T20 World Cup title under Rohit’s leadership.
Alongside the silverware, Rohit finished his T20I career with 4231 runs in 151 innings at a strike rate of 140.89. He retired as India’s top run-getter in T20Is.
