Gone are the days when 170-180 totals were competitive in T20Is. Now teams chase such totals like a walk in the park.
So teams batting first have to push their limits to the fullest and go beyond 200 runs. And it’s quite common to see teams breach that mark more often.
But even those scores aren’t 100 per cent safe either, prompting teams to aim for 240-plus totals.
This article will list the teams with the most 240-plus totals in T20I cricket.

Key Insights on 240-plus Team Totals in T20I Cricket
Record-Breaking Team Performances and Historical Milestones
Sri Lanka were the first team to breach the 240-run mark in T20I cricket. They smashed 260 for 6 against Kenya in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka’s total remained the highest for almost nine years.
Between 2007 and 2018, teams scored above 240 totals only 10 times in T20Is. But since 2019, the number has more than tripled and continues to grow.
Zimbabwe’s 344 for 4 against Gambia is the highest team total in all T20I cricket, while Nepal and England are the other teams to put up more than 300 runs on the board.
England’s 304 for 2 against South Africa in 2025, meanwhile, is the highest team total between two full members in T20Is.
Individual Team Achievements and Full Member Statistics
India have surpassed the 240-run mark the most times. The Indian team has posted six 240-plus totals in all, with three coming before 2020 and the other three since October 2024.
Among the full members, nine teams have scored 240-plus totals at least once, with seven achieving it multiple times. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Ireland are yet to go past the mark.
Zimbabwe racked up three 240-plus scores in a span of five days in 2024, the most by a team in a calendar year in T20Is.
Two of Zimbabwe’s 240-plus came in consecutive T20I matches. They are the only team to do so, as they plundered 240/8 against Rwanda and 344/4 against Gambia in the Africa sub-regional qualifiers in October 2024.
England and India have scored multiple 240-plus totals against an opponent in T20Is, with both teams achieving it against the West Indies.
High-Scoring Matches in Losing Causes and Unsuccessful Chases
India, New Zealand, Gibraltar, Serbia, and the West Indies are the five teams to lose a T20I despite scoring 240-plus runs. And India is the only one to lose while chasing a target.
The West Indies’ 258 for 5 against South Africa in 2023 is the highest T20I team total in a losing cause, while India’s 244 for 4 against the Windies in 2016 is the highest in an unsuccessful run chase.
South Africa chased down the 259-run target set by the Windies, the highest successful chase in T20Is.
The Windies and South Africa (259/4) scored 517 runs combined, making it the highest-aggregating T20I match.
Despite Japan posting 253 for 4 against Mongolia in 2024, the match ended in a no result. This is the only T20I match involving a 240-plus team total to produce a no result.
Fastest Successful Run Chases and High-Aggregate Thrillers
Thus far, there have been five instances of both teams scoring 240-plus totals in a T20I match. The instances are:
- West Indies (245/6 in 20 overs) won against India (244/4 in 20 overs) by one run (2016).
- New Zealand (243/6 in 20 overs) lost against Australia (245/5 in 18.5 overs) by five wickets (2018).

- Gibraltar (243/7 in 20 overs) lost against Bulgaria (244/4 in 14.2 overs) by six wickets (2025).
Bulgaria have recorded the fastest 240-plus run chase in T20Is, as they crushed the 244-run target set by Gibraltar in 14.2 overs.
