Key Insights – Decoding India’s Golden Era of Overseas Dominance under Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli’s Test captaincy debut came in the Adelaide Test in the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). While India lost the match, it showed Kohli’s hunger to go for a win at all costs.

From then till early January 2022, Kohli captained India in 37 overseas Tests. This is the most Test matches for an Indian skipper in foreign countries.

Of the 37 Tests, Kohli led the team to 16 victories, the most by an Indian skipper in overseas conditions. Only Sourav Ganguly (11) managed more than 10 away wins.

Seven of the 16 wins came in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. Kohli is the only Indian skipper with more than five Test wins in SENA.

Except for New Zealand, Kohli led India to Test wins in the other three countries – three in England and two each in Australia and South Africa.

Kohli led India in 13 overseas bilateral Test series, winning five of them. Two series wins each came in Sri Lanka (2015 & 2017) and the West Indies (2016 & 2019), and one in Australia (2018-19).

India’s 2015 series win in Sri Lanka was their first in 22 years. With that, Kohli became only the second Indian captain after Mohammad Azharuddin to win a Test series in Sri Lanka.

Two years later, he led India to a clean sweep (3-0) in Sri Lanka. This is the only instance of India clean-sweeping a Test series in Sri Lanka.

India also won two Test series under Kohli’s captaincy in the West Indies. This also involved a series sweep in 2019, again the only instance for India in the Windies.

Kohli is the only Indian captain to win two Test series and achieve one clean sweep each in Sri Lanka and the Windies.

The 2018-19 BGT victory meant Kohli became the first Indian and Asian skipper to clinch a Test series in Australia. The Men in Blue defeated the hosts by a 2-1 margin.
